Captain Wanindu Hasaranga has highlighted the strong team spirit as the Kandy Falcons gear up for Qualifier 2 of the Lanka Premier League 2024 in Colombo this Saturday. Last season, the Falcons clinched the LPL trophy by winning three consecutive playoff matches: the Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final. This year, they have started the playoffs on a winning note by defeating the Colombo Strikers in the Eliminator.
Hasaranga, reflecting on the team’s performance, mentioned that their previous success in the LPL 2023 playoffs gives them the confidence to repeat their achievements. The Falcons had to secure a significant victory in their final league match to improve their net run rate and advance to the playoffs. They accomplished this with a commanding 54-run win over the Dambulla Sixers.
In an interview after their Eliminator win, where Hasaranga took 2/21, he praised the camaraderie within the squad. “We have a fantastic group of players,” he said. “Our overseas players are very amicable, and many have been with us for two years, developing strong relationships with the staff and local players. Additionally, some of our experienced local players share their knowledge with the younger team members, fostering a positive environment.”
Looking ahead to Qualifier 2, Hasaranga emphasized the need for consistency. “To win a tournament, consistency is crucial,” he stated. “While anyone can win individual matches, tournament success requires experience, confidence, and consistency.” The Kandy Falcons are set to face the Jaffna Kings in their next match.
