This victory also marks the first Olympic gold medal ever won by Saint Lucia, a Caribbean island nation.
However, American athlete Sha’Carri Richardson, who many expected to win the gold medal in this event, secured the silver medal. She recorded a time of 10.87 seconds, providing a tough competition to the winner, Julien Alfred.
The bronze medal in this event was won by Melissa Jefferson of the United States, who finished the race in 10.92 seconds.
