Canelo Alvarez Defeats Edgar Berlanga, Retains Super Middleweight Titles

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez claimed a decisive victory over Edgar Berlanga on September 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Fighting during the Mexican Independence Day weekend, Alvarez defended his WBC, WBA, and WBO super middleweight titles, winning by unanimous decision with scores of 117-110, 118-109, and 118-109.

Canelo knocked Berlanga down with a left hook in the third round, but the fight went the full 12 rounds. With this win, Canelo improved his record to 62-2-2, 39 KOs, while Berlanga, previously undefeated, dropped to 22-1, 17 KOs.

In the co-main event, Erislandy Lara retained his WBA middleweight title by stopping Danny Garcia in the ninth round, and Caleb Plant secured the interim WBA 168 lbs belt with a TKO against Trevor McCumby.
