On January 24, 2025, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C., celebrated the public debut of two giant pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao. Their arrival marks the return of giant pandas to the zoo after a year-long absence.

Arrival and Quarantine

Bao Li and Qing Bao arrived from China in October 2024. Following their arrival, they underwent a mandatory quarantine period to ensure their health and well-being before being introduced to the public.

Public Debut and Celebrations

To celebrate their arrival, the zoo is hosting “District of Panda” events from January 25 to February 9, including a Lunar New Year celebration. For those unable to visit in person, the zoo has relaunched its Giant Panda Cam, offering live daily footage of the pandas from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST.

Panda Personalities

Bao Li and Qing Bao, both three years old, will reside at the zoo under a 10-year agreement with China. Bao Li is known for his vocal and engaging personality, while Qing Bao is more reserved and independent.

Historical Context

The National Zoo has a long history with giant pandas, beginning with the arrival of Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing in 1972. The previous pair, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, along with their cub Xiao Qi Ji, returned to China in November 2023, ending a 23-year era at the zoo. The arrival of Bao Li and Qing Bao continues this legacy, symbolizing ongoing collaboration between the U.S. and China in panda conservation efforts.
