On December 29, 2024, a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800, operating as Flight 7C2216 from Bangkok to Muan International Airport in South Korea, crashed during landing, resulting in at least 120 fatalities.

The aircraft, carrying 181 individuals—175 passengers and six crew members—attempted a landing without deploying its landing gear, causing it to skid off the runway and collide with a concrete wall, leading to a catastrophic fire.

Emergency responders rescued two injured crew members from the tail section, the only part of the plane that remained partially intact. Authorities have transitioned from rescue to recovery operations, focusing on locating and identifying the deceased.

This incident marks South Korea’s deadliest aviation disaster since a 1997 crash in Guam. Investigators are exploring potential causes, including bird strikes and adverse weather conditions. Jeju Air’s CEO has expressed condolences and pledged support to the affected families. All flights at Muan International Airport have been canceled, and South Korea’s acting President is overseeing the response efforts.
